Vienna Airport to City Centre: Train, S7 & CAT Updates
Vienna Airport to city centre train choices are affected by the 2026–2027 S-Bahn works. Compare Railjet or Intercity to Wien Hbf, the altered S7 arrival at St. Marx and CAT’s replacement bus. Choose the connection to your actual address; an old direct-to-Wien-Mitte description is unsuitable for this period.

S7 currently ends at Wien St. Marx
From 7 September 2026 until October 2027, S7 trains between the airport and Vienna terminate at Wien St. Marx, rather than continuing to Wien Mitte. For the city centre, use the local connection shown for your destination, such as tram 71 towards the Ringstraße.
In your journey planner, enter the hotel address or final city stop as the destination, so the onward transfer is included. Do not choose an S7 train expecting a direct arrival at Wien Mitte during this closure.
Railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof
Railjet and Intercity trains continue between Flughafen Wien and Wien Hbf, with an advertised journey time of about 15 minutes. During the works, REX7 also runs between the airport and Wien Hbf in about 20 minutes. These are planning figures; use the actual dated departure for your connection.
At Wien Hbf, follow signs to the U1 at Südtiroler Platz–Hauptbahnhof for a city-centre connection. If you are continuing towards Salzburg or Innsbruck, compare direct long-distance trains from Flughafen Wien before adding a separate city journey. Airport baggage collection and the walk to the railway platform are additional to the train time.
Vienna Airport to Salzburg by train
For Vienna Airport to Salzburg by train, search from Flughafen Wien for your actual date and compare a through service with an itinerary changing at Wien Hbf. Check the complete journey, transfer time and arrival station in each result. A through train avoids moving luggage at an interchange, but fare flexibility depends on the selected ticket rather than the number of changes. Allow time for passport control, baggage collection and the walk to the platform before choosing a departure after your flight.
CAT uses replacement buses during the closure
CAT replacement buses operate from 24 August 2026 to 31 October 2027. The normal 16-minute CAT train is suspended during this period. CAT publishes the bus boarding points and running times on its main-line-closure page; use that information before leaving the terminal or travelling to the city stop. Road traffic can affect the journey. CAT City Check-In is unavailable during the replacement period, so take your luggage to the airport for check-in.
CAT has its own ticket conditions. A CAT replacement bus, an ÖBB train and a normal city bus are different products; do not transfer the ticket validity of one to the others. Compare the total journey to your address, including the walk and any onward local connection.
Buy coverage for the whole journey
Vienna Airport is outside Vienna’s core city fare zone. A city-only ticket does not cover the full trip from the airport. If you already hold a valid Vienna city ticket, select the appropriate additional airport section in the official ticket system; if you do not, buy coverage for the complete journey and any intended urban continuation.
Enter your existing passes or discounts accurately instead of buying a second city-zone ticket unnecessarily. Special airport products such as CAT have their own validity rules. The product name and route printed on the issued ticket are more reliable than a general description of a “Vienna transport ticket”.
Allow time after landing
Landing time is not train boarding time. Passport control, baggage collection and walking to the railway station all need time, and flight delays can make a fixed departure impractical. For an onward long-distance journey, compare fare flexibility and connection options before choosing a train-specific offer. Keep the return airport journey separate from your outbound assumptions.
Recheck before departure
Use a dated timetable for first and last trains, planned works and the exact arrival station. Published typical intervals are not a guarantee for every hour. Where AustriaTrain displays a bookable fare, review the passenger total, fare conditions and included reservations before continuing. A timetable result or quote does not reserve a seat, and payment alone does not confirm ticket issuance. If the route or product is not offered, check with the operator. Verify airport and city-transport coverage separately for the product you select.
Compare the airport transfer door to door
Count baggage collection, the walk to the boarding point and the local connection after arrival. A shorter rail journey is not automatically the quickest trip to every hotel. For the return, work backwards from the airline’s required terminal arrival time, then add a margin for the station-to-terminal walk. Check airport-section ticket coverage separately from an existing Vienna city ticket.
